Ompuri, with his fortified intentions was succeeded in dispersing lustre. Despite the fact that he faced economic crisis during his childhood, he did not stop working on his dreams.At an age of 7 years, he worked at a tea stall. However, his frankness always made him surrounded by controversies. Born in Ambala, he was the youngest son of Tekchand puri and Tara Devi.
Harpal Tivana, also known as the father of modern Punjab theatre gave a new way to Ompuri’s life. Tivana saw him at Khalsa college in youth festival for the first time working as an actor in ‘Anhoni’.He proposed Ompuri to with him. Ompuri considered Tivana as a life changer.
After completed his graduation from National School of Drama in 1973, he started teaching in NSD. After teaching he resigned from his job and went to Pune for taking acting classes in FTII. His appearance made a big confusion for the Signature board of FTII. Om neither had a face that looks like a hero nor he had a face like a villain. Director Girish Karnad gave him a role in a children movie named as ‘chor chor chup jaye’, in which he played a role of a beggar.
In 1976, Ompuri take a turn to Mumbai. He got his first break in 1980 from the movie ‘aakrosh’ which was directed by Govind Nihalani. He played the role of Lavanya bhiku. Although his character was of a speechless mute person but it helped him to leave an impact in bollywood.
He made everyone his fans from the movie ‘ardsatya’.His followers began to increase. This movie remains in cinemas for about 22 weeks. He also got National Award for best actor in this movie.
In 70s, he was succeeded in leaving an impact on Indian televisions too. He played several characters in different shows like ‘yatra’ of Shyam Benegal, ‘Tribute to India’ and ‘Bharat Ek Khoj’ of Indian Railway, ‘Tamas’ of Govind Nihalani, etc.
He got a global identity. He also played a small role in ‘Gandhi’, directed by Richard Attenborough. Ompuri got a marked identity in 1999 after the release of his British comedy film ‘East is East’. Other than this Jade Smith’s novel -‘white teeth’ , ‘second generation’ plays a very significant role in his life. He also became the part of Spielberg’s -“100 feet Journey”. In 1990 he was awarded with Padamshrii by the Indian Government. In 2004 he was awarded with ‘Order of The British Empire’ in giving his contribution in the Britain’s film Industry.
Apart from this successful career, his personal life was always full of controversies. In 1990, he was married to Seema Kapoor. After a year later, Journalist Nandita entered into his life. In the year 1993, he took divorce from Seema and married to 16 years younger lady ,Nandita Puri. Nandita had file a case for domestic violence against Ompuri. Both got separated in the year 2013.
Above all , he spread 1000 colours of performance.
